  • 1.  Success measures for elevator pitch competition

    Dear Entrepreneurship scholars,

I'm looking for measures for potential of success that could be used by judges in an elevator pitch competition. Also, it would be great if they were published measures as well, so that I may be able to use them in a research design at some point.

I think there was a discuss on this a while ago, but I can't find those emails.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dave

Dave: regarding a standard, the proverbial...it all depends on the audience. Since we launched the elevator competition over 10 years ago...it is interesting to see how criteria morph depending on what is going on in the entrepreneurial world. I think that the ability to communicate:

Pain--> Venture description --> Business Model (target Market, value proposition, value network, value chain, economics, competitive strategy) --> Feasibility Analysis to see if it is compelling.

You cannot do all of this in 1-2 minutes, but to the extend you get the red in, and create a desire in the judges to "want to know more" sets winners apart.

Glad to discuss more as you may wish...and if your judges are seasoned VCs, they have their own mental model to bounce an idea from...cheers...Stan

Just a bit of clarification. There would be some written portion to the
competition, likely in the form of an elaborate concept statement, at
least one page. So the judging would be based not just on the pitch, but
the more detailed description of the business idea. I'm also interested
in any interpretation of "success". Since we're dealing with early stage
opportunities, that could be a wide range of things, including success
of the pitch itself (e.g., was the pitch clear and compelling). There is
a good scale in Keh, Foo & Lim, ETP 2002 (Section D of the instrument)
focusing on risk and whether or not there is an opportunity. Foo, Wong
and Ong, JBV 2005, also have some measures that are more market
    oriented.

    Thanks again,
    Dave
