As the Academy of Management explores ways to address the growing divide between scholarly research and on-the-ground practice, understanding the potential impact of the scholar-practitioner role is becoming increasingly important. Scholar-practitioners desire to contribute to both generating new knowledge and improving practice; they are boundary spanners. This professional development workshop will focus on exploring career strategies for those who are, or hope to become, scholar-practitioners by learning from those who forged new ground in this area. A panel of scholar-practitioners will reflect on their life journeys and how they have built careers that enable them to integrate research and practice. This panel will include individuals who are in different career stages and enact this role in a variety of settings. Participants will be invited to engage in a series of small group discussions, which will provide opportunities to locate themselves within the scholar-practitioner field, and give and receive feedback from other participants and panel members. In addition, participants will also be asked to collaboratively imagine what the future for scholar-practitioners might look like in five or ten years and brainstorm ideas for how we can, individually and/or collectively, create supportive venues for this boundary- spanning work. This workshop is particularly relevant to the Careers Division because it provides a unique development opportunity for division members as well as those from other divisions and interest groups. While this workshop focuses on the careers of scholar-practitioners, it explores career enactment and evolution, which may have implications across a variety of professions.
