A Well-Planned Workshop on "Unplanned Behavior"

Submission: 10396 | Sponsor(s): (ENT, BPS, OB, ODC)

    Scheduled: Friday, Aug 7 2009 8:00AM - 10:00AM

At: Hyatt Regency Chicago in Skyway 272

Increasingly, empirical research suggests that much entrepreneurial activity and even successful entrepreneurship sometimes does not follow an idealized linear model. Against this backdrop, scholars have proposed several theoretical perspectives of what we will here simplistically call "unplanned behavior", including bricolage, effectuation and improvisation. In accordance with the Academy's theme, parts of this literature propose that an absence of planning counter-intuitively creates value for the natural environment. This is because all concepts seem to build on the notion of using resources at hand, which can include those currently unused or those ready for reuse. In a Well-Planned Workshop on "Unplanned Behavior", we will contribute to the discussion within the ENT division of the Academy as follows: First, we will provide a discussion basis through expert presentations on current states of research (including scholars and professionals familiar with the practical application, like Second City Communications). Second, with a high degree of audience interaction we will offer a discussion forum for differentiating these three streams and for delineating their relationships with planning. Third, we will stimulate the discussion on how to advance these exciting new ways of thinking. We strive to achieve two goals: 1. to foster new research projects that will help to compare and differentiate the concepts, especially with regard to the use of resources 2. to facilitate transfer of research into practice (consulting and teaching), and to inspire future research through practice input.
