This an announcement of two exciting preconference events. Please read the notice carefully (and do not reply to this email but use the instructions in the message to reserve your place).
The IMD Division is sponsoring two pre-conference activities.
The first of these is an ARCHITECTURAL TOUR of the city of Chicago. Chicago is known for its unique contribution to architecture, from the nature of its skyscrapers to the unique architecture of its different neighborhoods. The tour will run from approximately 1PM to 4:30 PM on 6 August (departing from one of the conference hotels). The tour will be led by Diane Dillon who is a leading expert on the history of Chicago architecture. The tour (which will be by bus) will encompass the loop, the Near Northside, the Lakeside and museum districts and many of the neighborhoods of the Southside (e.g., Bronzville and Prairie Avenue). For an idea of what you will see just visit http://webapps.cityofchicago.org/LandmarksWeb/maps.do.
We can take up to 50 individuals.
The second pre-conference event is a visit to McDonald's HAMBURGER UNIVERSITY in Oak Brook. Hamburger University is the training ground for McDonald's franchisees and executives and is world famous for its approach to training. The trip will include a visit to the facilities as well as presentations by trainers and the team at Hamburger University. The visit will be on 7 August and depart at approximately 7:30 AM (again from one of the conference hotels) and return at approximately 2PM (departing HU at about 1PM). McDonald's is graciously providing lunch as part of the visit. You can get information about HU at http://www.aboutmcdonalds.com/mcd/careers/hamburger_university.html.
We can take up to 40 individuals.
The cost of the architectural tour events is $40 for academic staff, with a limited number of spaces at 1/2 price reserved for PhD students (currently we are holding 10 places). Family members, friends and significant others are welcome to join this event (at the full price).
The cost of the Hamburger University visit is $50 for academic staff with a limited number of 1/2 price spaces available for PhD students (currently we are holding 10 places). Currently this event is open only to those attending the conference (no family, friends or others).
If you are interested in either event you can register by sending an email with your details (Full name, affiliation and mobile phone number) to IMDEvents@gmail.com [PLEASE DO NOT JUST REPLY TO THIS EMAIL!!!!!]. With the following:
1. Indicate in the subject which event you are wishing to attend (send a separate email for each event as this is the screen).
2. Please also indicate if you are a PhD student (you will need to verify this in some way - link to a website, attendance at a doctoral consortium event). The first 10 PhD students will be given spaces at the discounted rate. All others will be waitlisted unless they wish to guarantee a place by paying the full price.
Closer to the date I will inform all the registered attendees of the specific logistics. It is possible that if the events are fully booked we can also reduce the prices accordingly (which are mainly the cost of transport). We will also accept payment in Euros and RMB at outrageous exchange rates!
