    Dear all,

We are conducting a multi-wave survey study of on-going business start-up efforts. As some non-negligible disruptions have occurred in these emerging firms' economic (macro-)environment we are considering adding questions about the impact the global financial crises (is perceived to) have had -- in a number of ways -- on what they do and/or plan and/or aspire to do.

I you (know of somebody who) have developed and used such a package of questions about the impact of the GFC on emerging, new or small firms -- and are willing to share them -- we would be very interested to have a look. Hopefully, re-use of questions already developed could be of mutual benefit as regards comparison data and enhanced validation, etc.

    Best Regards,

    Hi Per,

We added some additional questions on the next follow up round of the Kauffman Firm Survey that deal with the financial crisis and its impact on their business ventures.  At this point, having started in 2004, these firms are now four years old.  We are going out into the field starting in about a week and asking about calendar year 2008.

These are the questions we added:

F14i.        How much did the nation's recent financial problems, which became highly visible in 2008, affect [NAME BUSINESS] during calendar year 2008? Would you say . . .

                            A lot,................................................................................. 01

                            Some, or.......................................................................... 02

                            Not at all?......................................................................... 03

                            DON'T KNOW................................................................. d

                            REFUSED....................................................................... r

F14j.        What was the most challenging problem your business faced in calendar year 2008? Was it . . .

An inability to obtain credit,.............................................. 01

                            Slow or lost sales,............................................................ 02

                            Falling real estate values,................................................ 03

The cost and/or terms of credit,...................................... 04

The unpredictability of business conditions, or................ 05

                            Some other problem? (SPECIFY).................................. 06

                            _____________________________________________

                            DON'T KNOW................................................................. d

                            REFUSED....................................................................... r

You should also check out NFIB's recent survey-their December report has results from survey questions about the crisis.

    Per-

We've added some questions to the Kauffman Firm Survey (www.kauffman.org/kfs) about the crisis for just these reasons.  Here are the questions:

F14i.        How much did the nation's recent financial problems, which became highly visible in 2008, affect [NAME BUSINESS] during calendar year 2008? Would you say . . .

                            A lot,................................................................................. 01

                            Some, or.......................................................................... 02

                            Not at all?......................................................................... 03

                            DON'T KNOW................................................................. d

                            REFUSED....................................................................... r

F14j.        What was the most challenging problem your business faced in calendar year 2008? Was it . . .

An inability to obtain credit,.............................................. 01

                            Slow or lost sales,............................................................ 02

                            Falling real estate values,................................................ 03

The cost and/or terms of credit,...................................... 04

The unpredictability of business conditions, or................ 05

                            Some other problem? (SPECIFY).................................. 06

                            _____________________________________________

                            DON'T KNOW................................................................. d

                            REFUSED....................................................................... r

Additionally, I can say that in the U.S. the NFIB did quite a good survey on credit access at the end of year which we've found very helpful: http://www.411sbfacts.com/sbpoll.php?POLLID=0071&KT_back=1

    Thanks!
