    LAST CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS:

    Dear Entrepreneurship colleagues,

The inaugural event as part of a research council funded series on  small business social responsibility in developing countries will take place in Botswana, January 7 & 8 2014 as part of the Africa Academy of Management. There are TWO events, a training workshop for early career/PhD colleagues, and a stream as part of the main conference – deadlines are 7th & 8th November. I am afraid scholarships are only available for African students, but all are welcome to participate.

Do pass this on to anyone who may be interested! Don't hesitate to contact me if you have a possible idea you want to discuss laura.spence@rhul.ac.uk

    Many thanks, Laura

Call for papers for Special Seminar on CSR among African SMEs

    Submission Deadline: 7 November 2013

The Africa Academy of Management (AFAM) is delighted to announce this special seminar, which is funded by the UK's prestigious Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and co-organised by three UK universities - the University of Nottingham, Middlesex University and Royal Holloway, University of London. The event will take place on 8 January 2014, as part of the 2nd Biennial AFAM Conference in Botswana.

We invite both empirical and conceptual papers examining issues relating to corporate social responsibility (CSR) among African small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), in all subject areas of management: human resource management, organizational behaviour, management education, strategic management, entrepreneurship and any other related subject areas. We understand CSR in its widest possible sense as any socially or environmentally responsible practices by business organizations and social enterprises.

Papers can address any topics related to CSR among African SMEs, for example:

    · which theoretical frameworks can help to explain CSR in SMEs in Africa?

    · what factors drive or hinder African SMEs to engage in CSR?

    · what benefits do African SMEs derive from CSR?

    · what are the outcomes of SMEs adopting socially responsible practices?

    · what is the role of owner-managers and employees in adopting responsible practices?

    · how does CSR among African SMEs differ from CSR among large companies?

    · how is CSR practised differently in Africa from the rest of the world?

    · what supporting institutions (e.g. banks, industry associations, NGOs, etc.) in Africa can encourage socially responsible practices among SMEs?

    · how does government regulation relate to CSR among African SMEs?

    · what lessons can SMEs learn from CSR in large organizations, and vice versa?

    · what role does entrepreneurship play in CSR in Africa?

    · how does CSR in SMEs compare with social enterprises in an African context?

    · and any other CSR-SME related topics
