Thomas Edison envisioned his phonograph as a business dictation machine

Aspirin was used as a pain killer for over 100 years

Viagra was developed to treat heart disease

But instead of fulfilling their inventors' aims, these inventions were exapted as a jukebox, a blood thinner, and a libido-enhancer.  Our PDW will explore exaptation's potential contributions to organization theory, strategy, technological innovation, and entrepreneurship.

    Sponsors:

Organization and Management Theory (OMT); Business Policy and Strategy (BPS); Entrepreneurship (ENT); Technology and Innovation Management (TIM)

    Time:

    Saturday, 2 August 2014: 8:00 – 10:00 am

    Location:

    Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 203B

    Panelists / Discussants:

Phil Anderson INSEAD; Gino Catani NYU; Vibha Gaba INSEAD; Dan Levinthal Wharton; Chris Marquis Harvard; Alan Meyer U. Oregon; Anne Miner U. Wisconsin; Saras Sarasvathy U. Virginia.

    Workshop Content:

Panelists will define exaptation, distinguishing it from adjacent concepts such as adaptation, effectuation, variation, selection, and retention. Early applications of exaptation in the domains of OMT, BPS, ENT, and TIM will be summarized.

Small group breakout discussions facilitated by panelists and discussants will explore exaptation's potential for advancing our modeling of different concepts and different levels of analysis. Discussants will speculate about how exaptation might advance our understanding of organizational evolution and learning. A concluding plenary discussion will gather insights developed during the breakout groups, and address general questions.
