• 1. Engineering and Business Entrepreneurship programs? Question from Univ. of Cambridge.

Posted 03-22-2008 09:13
Dear Anja:
I am a faculty member at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In
addition to teaching undergraduate entrepreneurship courses in the faculty
of management I have also taught similar courses to students in electrical
engineering, industrial engineering, computer science, occupational therapy,
physio therapy and dental hygiene. Perhaps the most interesting project was
a collaborative effort between three engineering schools (Dalhousie,
Memorial and University of New Brunswick) to deliver a synchronous online
course in entrepreneurship course to senior engineering students on all
three campuses jointly delivered by faculty from all three campuses. In the
process we have developed a couple of online tutorials - one in financial
modeling and one in idea generation using creative problem solving
techniques. Cites for related articles are listed below:

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Engineering Design Centre of the
University of Cambridge and fairly new to the ENTREP list.

I was wondering whether I could pick your brain on innovative methods in
teaching entrepreneurships to undergraduate engineers and business
students? Have you taught a course like this before and how would you
approach it? Maybe you could point me to some methods, courses, names etc.

Your supprt would be highly appreciated.

With many thanks and best wishes for Easter,

Anja.

Dear Anja,

Two organizations you should look at for this are the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE; www.asee-ent.org) Entrepreneurship Division and the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA; www.nciia.org). The NCIIA annual meeting was last week in Dallas, Texas, and I found it quite helpful despite being in this business for 25 years. The ASEE meeting is June 22-25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and typically offers a large number of papers related to building courses and programs in engineering entrepreneurship. While NCIIA addresses a broad audience, ASEE is more narrowly focused on engineering, but both also intersect with business education in many instances. Also look at the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP; http://stvp.stanford.edu/), which has a resource, Educators Corner, that I think you will find helpful.

I happen to be chair-elect of the ASEE Entrepreneurship Division (and have been chair of the Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division), so please let me know if there are specific questions you have once you peruse these resources.

The key issue in innovative educational methods is the productivity, sustainability, and reliability of the effort. You can easily run all over the place doing things that aren't worth the effort, and are unsustainable and unreliable. Bright students should benefit most from a competitive entrepreneurship simulation. If interested, I'll set one up for you, as explained below.

The demo of my simulation is available at: http://pages.towson.edu/precha/geonetd5.exe. Select Run/Open at all security warnings. Do not save the program, as I upgrade the server regularly. A saved program may not work correctly after an upgrade.

When the program unzips and launches itself, an Access-to-GEO dialog box will appear. Select the Register button, and register yourself using a fictitious name. When you OK the registration, the program's main frame will appear. You can do anything you like at that point as it's only a demo.

When the demo exits, it cleans up after itself, leaving nothing on the computer. You must have Microsoft's .Net Framework installed for the demo to work. If you don't have it installed, you can download it free (I suggest Version 2) from Microsoft's Web site: http://www.msdn.com.

I don't market the simulation, so there's no cost to you or to your students. I do ask interested parties to send me a postal letter of request on institutional letterhead giving me information about intended usage: class size, course name, course level, number of students, start dates, stop date, and institutional Web site. Depending on circumstances, more than one party may be joined in a simulation experience.

Best,

• 4. Engineering and Business Entrepreneurship programs? Question from Univ. of Cambridge.

Hello Anja,

we teach a course at Aachen University that includes both engineering and business students. They would get a lecture of basic e-ship theory and an accompanying practical part where they are put together in groups of four (two business, two non-business students). We would match each group with one engineer or scientist from RWTH Aachen who actually thinks about commercializing some technical idea. We would have identified those people beforehand. And then we make them to go through the process of creating a 10-page version of a business concept, walking them through every single step in the practical sessions. At the end, they have to hand in the paper, have to present and defend the concept before a small audience and have to submit the concept to our regional business plan competition.

This concept has been quite successful and we will continue doing that.
