    CALL FOR PAPERS
5th Annual Symposium on the PSED
    “Research on Business Creation”

    Greenville, South Carolina: October/November 2008

The purpose of this symposium is to provide an opportunity for scholars
using the PSED to meet and discuss their efforts while they are “works in
progress” and to develop these efforts into research that can be published
in major academic journals. In that regard, papers submitted to the 5th
Annual Symposium on the PSED will be considered for a special issue of
Small Business Economics (SBE) on “Research on Business Creation.” All
papers published in this special issue of SBE will be double blind
    reviewed.

The PSED is a representative portrait of entrepreneurial activity in the
United States that identifies individuals in the process of creating new
businesses. The PSED provides systematic, reliable and generalizable data
on important features of the new business creation process including
information on the proportion and characteristics of the adult population
involved in efforts to start businesses, the activities and
characteristics that comprise the nature of the business start-up process,
and the proportion and characteristics of those business start-up efforts
that actually become new businesses. Thanks to funding from the
Kauffman Foundation, this dataset is available at no charge at:
    www.psed.info, or at: www.psed.isr.umich.edu/psed.

The symposium will be held in at the Westin Hotel in Greenville, SC at the
end of October or in early November, 2008. Expenses for lodging and meals
will be partially subsidized by a grant from the Kauffman Foundation.
Participants will responsible for transportation to Greenville, SC.

In order to attend the symposium, participants must submit a working
paper, using PSED data, no later than September 1, 2008. Symposium
participants will make brief presentations about their current research.
Each participant will be required to discuss another paper and provide a
brief written evaluation of that paper.
