Are you a doctoral student or a junior faculty member who is interested in learning the craft of
reviewing or improving your reviewing skills? If so, the MOC Division is sponsoring “Reviewing in the
Rough: A Professional Development Workshop for Doctoral Students and Junior Faculty” at this year’s
Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL.

To reserve your spot, please complete the following steps:
    1. Send an e-mail to mocreview@gmail.com to request a copy of an original submission of Scott
DeRue’s manuscript “The riddle of heterarchy: Power transitions in cross-functional teams.”
    2. Complete a formal review of this manuscript (i.e., approximately two single-spaced pages).
    3. E-mail your completed review to mocreview@gmail.com.
    4. We will e-mail you the registration code for the PDW.
    5. Register for the PDW at the AOM program website.

Please note that spots in the workshop will be allotted to the first 45 doctoral students and junior
faculty members who submit their completed reviews before July 1st.

Reviewing is a critical “professional responsibility” and an integral part of participating in the
academic community (Trevino, 2008). Yet Tsang and Frey (2007: 129) noted that “there is no formal
training for referees who usually pick up their review skills through learning by doing.” This raises a
perplexing question for doctoral students and junior faculty: how can they develop critical reviewing
skills when there are so few opportunities for them to practice the art of reviewing? This PDW provides
participants with a rare opportunity to learn and practice the art of reviewing. Prior to the conference,
participants will be asked to prepare a formal review of an original submission of Scott DeRue’s
manuscript “The riddle of heterarchy: Power transitions in cross-functional teams” (Aime, Humphrey,
DeRue, & Paul, forthcoming). The actual workshop will consist of two parts: (1) a panel and (2)
interactive roundtables. The panel will provide participants an opportunity to gain key insights about
the review process and quality reviewing from scholars who have served as an Associate Editor and
Editorial Board Member at the leading journals in our field. In the interactive roundtables, Scott DeRue
will provide background information about the original submission of his manuscript and then
participants will break into small groups, facilitated by an experienced faculty member, to discuss and
receive feedback on their formal reviews. Scott will then discuss the actual reviews of his original
submission and how they helped shape the final manuscript. The PDW will conclude with a question
    and answer period with Scott.
