Call for IDEA Award Nominations: REMINDER

  • 1.  Call for IDEA Award Nominations: REMINDER

    Posted 03-02-2009 13:47

    Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management and the University of Connecticut Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, we are writing, again,  to invite you to nominate candidates for the 2009 IDEA Awards, which serve as part of the Division's Research Excellence Initiative.

At this year's Academy of Management meeting in Chicago, we will be holding the second annual IDEA Awards dinner, to honor excellence in entrepreneurship research. We therefore seek high quality research that has been, is, or is likely to be influential to the field of entrepreneurship.  Accordingly, we are using a very broad cross-disciplinary conceptualization of entrepreneurship that, for example, encompasses work in business formation, corporate entrepreneurship, creativity, family business, innovation, institutions and entrepreneurship, new value creation, opportunity, technology entrepreneurship, venture capital, etc. In the years to come, we believe an IDEA Award will become one of the most highly prized and respected awards in our field.

In particular, we are now calling for nominations for IDEA Awards in the following categories:

Foundational Paper (1) - A classic and highly influential contribution to entrepreneurship research that serves as a legacy for scholarly work in the field

Thought Leader  Papers (4) - Best published papers in entrepreneurship from the prior year (2008).

To provide the widest opportunity for participation, we solicit your considered input for these awards. Please identify 2-3 nominations per category by April 17, 2009. Each nomination must include a traditional citation on the nominated work and be emailed to idea-awards@business.uconn.edu. While self-nominations will be accepted, they are discouraged, because they do not fully capture the spirit of this Call which is to look beyond one's own scholarship toward conceptualizing contributions to the field.

Authors will split $1500 in prize money for each of the above awards, in addition to each receiving a beautiful crystal monument recognizing her/his achievement.

There was also a third IDEA Award category represented at the inaugural 2008 IDEA Awards dinner held in Anaheim: the Research Promise IDEA Award. Consistent with our commitment to continuous improvement, after a thorough review of the Entrepreneurship Division's portfolio of research awards, the Division leadership has decided that emerging scholars are already competing for several Division awards that honor "research promise." Thus, in an effort to avoid duplication, winners of these Division Research Awards will be invited to the IDEA Awards Dinner,  receive the Research Promise IDEA Award that accompanies their winning of their particular Division Research Award, which will be acknowledged with a beautiful crystal monument recognizing her/his achievement.

This year, the IDEA Awards dinner will be held in Chicago, on Sunday evening, August, 9th 2009. Due to space limitations, this will again be an invitation only event (with a random selection from a pool of volunteers to represent the Division-at-large); and details on the location and time will be sent out in the coming months.  (NOTE:  A resend of the detailed explanation of this initiative to the ENT Division membership will follow for colleagues who may not have encountered the first email on this topic.)

We look forward to receiving your nominations. Again, the deadline is April 17, 2009. Please email your nominations and associated citations to: idea-awards@business.uconn.edu.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

    Best regards,
    Ron Mitchell
