Scott,
Another source is the Federal Reserve's Survey of Small Business
Finances (SSBF). The dataset includes more established firms, but by
using a screen of businesses less than 2-3 years old then startup
capital can be approximated. It provides one of the most detailed
sources including both amounts of financing and types of
financing. The current Survey of Business Owners, which replaced the
1992 Characteristics of Business Owners (CBO) only includes types of
financing. The 1992 CBO is still one of the best sources including
both startup capital amounts and sources of financing. It might also
be possible to impute startup capital from data on business assets in
the NLSY79. By examining the business worth of individuals who just
become self-employed business owners startup capital can be
approximated. Finally, there is a dataset that vFinance has created
for entrepreneurs visiting their web page. They have some
information on startup financing.
