Call for Submissions for 2011 Professional Development Workshop at AOM

Title:                                        Increasing the Quality of Women's and Minority Entrepreneurship Research: A mentoring workshop for researchers trained outside of North America.

    Submission Number:               15447

    Primary Sponsor:                     Entrepreneurship (ENT) Division

We invite both 1) 'early stage' and 2) 'mid to late' stage work. To be eligible, the research proposal or paper must fall within the domain of women's and/or minority entrepreneurship. In the case where a completed paper is submitted, it must not be under review with any academic journal at the time of submission to the workshop.  In addition to submitting a proposal or paper, participants must also submit a brief overview outlining any questions or specific concerns they are hoping to receive feedback on within the roundtable format.  Participants will be required to make a submission by June 15, 2011.

    Abstract

Our goal in this PDW is to encourage high quality research on women's and minority entrepreneurship by providing mentoring to researchers trained outside of North America – particularly those from developing countries in Asia, Africa, South America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East-who are interested in this research domain. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their current research and to receive detailed feedback in a supportive environment with senior scholars in these areas of research.  In order to maximize learning and exchange, participants will be required to make a written submission so that their work can be reviewed and discussed in detail. In order to open this workshop up to as many scholars as possible, we will invite two different streams of submissions: 1) 'early stage' proposals outlining planned research (4-5 pages); and 2) 'mid to late' papers reporting on completed research (25-30 pages). The workshop format will begin with a presentation delivered by an accomplished scholar in the field, who will provide an overview of the domain and suggestion for improving the quality of entrepreneurship research. Following this, the workshop will move into roundtable format so that senior scholars can provide detailed feedback on submitted proposals and papers. The focus will be on helping participants strengthen their theoretical and empirical contributions, so that their work has a higher chance of being published within top-tier journals. This session will provide an excellent opportunity for scholars based outside of North America to develop their research, gain new skills and insights, and build professional contacts with peers and senior scholars in the field. Participants will be encouraged to continue developing their research for submission to, and potential publication within the special journal issues being planned for, the 2012 Diana International Conference and the 2012 AGSE conference (both will be in Perth, Australia).

    Detailed Overview of the Workshop

This PDW is designed for scholars based outside of North America who are working in the area of women's entrepreneurship and/or minority entrepreneurship, and who are interested in developing their professional research networks and receiving useful feedback on their planned or ongoing research. Because we wish to make the session as inclusive as possible, we are inviting two different types of submissions. The first are 'early stage' research proposals outlining planned research (4-5 pages). The second type are 'mid to late' stage papers that report on already completed research (25-30 pages). We believe this format will allow more scholars to benefit from the workshop than if the session were restricted to completed papers only. By including research at various stages of development, the workshop will also help spark discussion about a wide range of issues spanning the research process (e.g. research design, analytic techniques, preparing manuscripts for publication). A final benefit of a more diverse group of participants will be enhanced opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, a valuable complement to the formal feedback provided by senior scholars.

In order to ensure meaningful exchange, and in-depth feedback on research, we will cap registration at 15 submissions (3-4 per table). We will also reserve 4-5 spaces (1-2 per table) for additional co-authors of papers, or for participants who do not have work under review but who are interested in learning more about research in this domain. The total number of participants will be capped at a maximum of 20 scholars.

    3) Reviewers

Eight scholars to serve as reviewers and mentors in the roundtable format.  Each table will have 2 scholars assigned to it. The following scholars have agreed to participate as reviewers and mentors:

Submissions will first be screened by the workshop organizers to ensure they meet the criteria noted above.  In selecting submissions our first criteria will be the quality and potential of the research. We will also strive to ensure a good balance between 'early stage' proposals and 'mid to later stage' papers, and to include an interesting mix of topics and methodological approaches.

Once selected for review, proposals or papers will be sent to two senior scholars who have agreed to review work for this session.  Reviewers participating in roundtables devoted to 'early stage' proposals will be asked to review 3 proposals in total. Those taking part in roundtables devoted to 'mid to later' stage papers will be asked to review 2 papers. Reviewers will prepare written comments and will provide verbal feedback in the roundtable aimed at helping participants strengthen the quality of their work by sharpening their empirical analysis and theoretical contribution. Reviewers will respond to the questions and issues identified by the participant for discussion but will also offer advice and feedback on all aspect of the papers that they feel are important. All of the senior scholars participating in the workshop have conducted extensive research on women entrepreneurs and have published in top-tier entrepreneurship journals and/or are members of editorial review boards.
