I'm finally getting back to share a quick summary of the responses that I got pertaining to a post asking if anyone had tested the results of Lean Startup vs business planning education.

I received 25 responses of interest from all over the world (universities/organizations listed below). Only one researcher (Ted Ladd, from Hult International Business School) indicated that he was working on a project testing the effect of different lean startup practices of teams within a business accelerator on results in a pitch competition.   Marc Gruber did point to our attention to one of his papers that is very relevant to the question.
Gruber, M. 2007. Uncovering the value of planning in new venture creation: A process and contingency perspective. Journal of Business Venturing, 22(6): 782–807.

I think that the response indicates that there is widespread interest, yet little testing has been performed. I received a few expressions of interest in perhaps seeking to contribute to the testing of the differential impacts of lean startup and business plan approaches to teaching. I'm interested in that too. In order to help promote some collaboration, I can do the following:

    1. Help organize AOM PDW. I think it might be too late for the upcoming AOM, but a PDW is a perfect venue to gather together those interested in testing lean startups (relative to business planning). I have not organized a PDW before and do not need to take the lead, but if there are at least five other scholars who are actively planning on testing some part of lean startups methodology, I'd be willing to help organize a PDW for AOM in 2016.

    2. Share current interests. If you are seeking for collaborators to do a research study sooner than later, please send an email to me at hans.rawhouser@unlv.edu, as follows:
    Subject: LEAN STARTUPS AOM INTEREST.
Body: please explain what direction you would plan on taking to develop a study. For example, "My interest is in field studies to test the impact of lean startup vs business planning. I teach both lean startups and business planning, but I only have about 20 students each semester, so I am seeking organizations that work with entrepreneurs."

I will share all the responses that I get with all those that respond to me.
