The studENT - AOM Annual Meeting 2026

Dear participants in the upcoming AOM Annual Meeting,

I thought this month's column could offer some basic advice on how to make the most of the AOM Annual Meeting, especially for those who are currently on the job market or preparing to enter it in the coming years.

The Annual Meeting is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the latest research in our field. It is also one of the best occasions to meet colleagues, build relationships, and expand your professional network.

One activity I particularly recommend is participating in doctoral consortia. These events allow you to meet fellow doctoral students from around the world, many of whom you will continue to encounter throughout your academic career. The connections formed during these early years often become lasting professional relationships and friendships.

If you are on the job market, or expect to be in the near future, AOM also offers a valuable opportunity to learn more about institutions where you might like to work. If there is a university or department that interests you, why not take the initiative to meet some of its faculty members? Doing so can help you reduce uncertainty and gain a better sense of whether the institution would be a good fit for you.

Many universities organize receptions or informal gatherings during the conference. If they do, attend them and introduce yourself. These events are designed to facilitate conversations and connections. If there is no formal reception, you can still be proactive. Reach out by email, check the conference program to see who is attending, and arrange a brief conversation or coffee meeting. Most academics are happy to speak with motivated doctoral students.

My final advice is simple: be active, be curious, and enjoy the experience!
