    Hi,

We are planning to set up a coffee shop at business school and let students run it.

Do you have any experience/suggestions how to do it right? For example, students' responsibilities and liabilities, and how to motivate students to participate, etc.

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

    Hi Dalong,

I think Syracuse has a student run coffee shop as well. A really good one if I remember correctly.. I think it's called People's Place Café.

Great coffee and very affordable as well.

The University of Dayton has been a leader in this area, and they specifically have a student-run coffee kiosk.

    Hi
University of Nebraska Omaha has one run by the Entrepreneurship students in the lobby of the business school. Contact Dale that runs the Entrepreneurship Center. He is very helpful.

    Hi Dalong,

We have one at Appalachian State in the lobby of the business college. It's set up as a 501c3 and we partner with a local coffee roaster for beans etc... More info and some contacts can be found here: https://entrepreneurship.appstate.edu/clubs/beans-2-brew

    Good luck!

Hello. One thing to consider. When College of Charleston students opened their in-the-business-school coffee shop, they ran into a roadblock from the external food service provider for the university. Apparently, the contract extended to "all campus buildings." So in the best entrepreneurial tradition, they began by selling coffee cups, then filling each cup once for free. Check with your university contracts officer first.

Indiana Wesleyan University has an award winning one that is the second or third highest grossing one in the state but in terms of finances it is an example of what NOT to do.  A former President changed the structure so that 30% of gross revenues goes to the organization that runs the school's cafeteria which makes it so that the coffee shop can't actually operate at a net profit.
