    The complexity of who we are: using an identity lens in IHRM studies

    ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

    Who we are defines how we engage with work and others. In turn, our work, and who we engage with (at work and beyond) define who we are. Starting from this simple premise, this webinar will promote the idea that it is particularly helpful to adopt an identity lens in IHRM research and practice.

    We will examine seminal theoretical frameworks underpinning identity studies, demonstrate the utility of an identity-focused approach in tackling research questions within IHRM, and explore how this approach can broaden our theoretical explanations in this domain, with significant implications for practice.

    A key focus of the conversation will be the identification of opportunities for identity-informed research agendas in IHRM, considering the need to further explore the role of both work-related identities (e.g., those based on professions, work teams, or organisations) and non-work identities (such as gender or cultural identities), understand their interactions, and fully capture how the multiple identities we hold influence how we experience and engage with work.

    We will also spotlight emergent work-induced identities (like "performance-based identity") and emphasize the need to consider the 'dark side' of (workplace) identities – essential in understanding complex phenomena that are inherently identity-driven, such as the challenge of creating truly inclusive workplaces or designing practices that support both performance and well-being at work.

    ABOUT THE SPEAKER

    Dan Caprar

    Dan Caprar is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney Business School, Australia.His research, teaching, and consulting are focused on culture, identity, and leadership, reflecting his interest in understanding how individuals can influence, and are influenced, by their work and life contexts.

    A psychologist by training, Dan draws on extensive international work experience. Before completing his MBA and PhD as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Iowa (USA), Dan worked in a range of consulting and managerial roles in business, not-for-profit, and government organisations in Romania, the UK, and the US.

    His research has been published in top tier journals (e.g., Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Annals, Human Relations, Academy of Management Learning and Education, Journal of Business Ethics, etc.), and featured in broader audience media. He also co-authored several book chapters, and co-edited The Sage Handbook of Contemporary Cross-Cultural Management.

    Besides teaching in the MBA and Executive Education programs at the University of Sydney, Dan conducts executive coaching and leadership development programs with organisations in Australia and around the world, with particular interest in contributing to initiatives that have a positive social impact.

    This session will be moderated by Mila Lazarova, Professor of International Business, at Simon Fraser University Beedie School of Business, Canada.
