    CALL FOR PDW PARTICIPANTS

Demystifying Ethnography: Observations, Field Note Writing & Expert Tales (PART A)

Professional Development Workshop (Sponsored by the Organization and Management Theory Division)

2023 Academy of Management Annual Meeting

August 5, 2023, 10:00 AM - 13:30 PM ET (UTC-4) at Boston Park Plaza in Grand Ballroom B

    Application deadline: Friday 16th June

    Dear colleagues,

We are delighted to invite you to our Professional Development Workshop (PDW), offering a unique opportunity to get hands-on training in conducting field observations and writing field notes followed by thematic discussions - all guided by expert ethnographers. This PDW targets early-stage qualitative researchers who may be new to ethnography and face numerous challenges as they seek to embark on ethnographic research. Overall, the PDW is structured in two parts:

Part A: Mechanics of conducting an ethnography (Application is required, with participation limited to 50 attendees)

The first part of the PDW is reserved for participants who applied by filling in the online form and have been accepted to participate. Part A will provide a hands-on learning opportunity around the mechanics of conducting an ethnography, focusing on observations and field notes. Early-stage qualitative researchers with limited experience in conducting field observations and writing field notes are encouraged to apply. Accepted participants will be asked to observe a live event and write field notes during the session, followed by debriefing, sharing of learnings, and open discussion with faculty experts who can provide participants with practical guidelines on building their skills forward. Part A will feature five internationally renowned scholars who are experts in ethnography and qualitative methods to facilitate the small-group interactions (in alphabetical order): Beth Bechky, Anne-Laure Fayard, Ruthanne Huising, Hila Lifshitz-Assaf, and Melissa Mazmanian.

    Application process for Part A:
Applicants interested in attending the Part A of the workshop are invited to fill in the online application form by answering general questions about their contact information, motivation for applying to the PDW, prior experience with field observations, and research interests. To allow participants to benefit from small-group interactions, only 50 participants will be accepted.

Applicant eligibility: Early-stage qualitative researchers with limited experience in conducting field observations and writing field notes.

Submission deadline: 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time (New York time) on Friday, 16th June 2023. Acceptance notices will be sent by 30th June.

    * Part B of the PDW, with a panel discussion and roundtable discussions, does not require registration!
