We cordially invite you to attend the upcoming AOM PDW on "Strategic Management of Enabling Technologies: Challenges for Firm Innovation and Value Appropriation" at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting 2024 in Chicago. Participation is open for presentations and panel discussions, but pre-registration is required for feedback on research proposals from panelists.

OverviewEnabling technologies, such as machine learning, robotics, and the Internet, are generic technological inventions that drive radical technological changes across application sectors. In this workshop, we bring together prominent scholars in the fields of strategy and organizational studies to discuss the unique challenges and research opportunities that enabling technologies pose for strategic management research and enrich the theoretical grounding for studying enabling technologies.

This two-and-a-half-hour PDW will follow a three-part format. In Part I, four leading scholars (Gautam Ahuja, Mahka Moeen, Elena Novelli, and Jeffrey J Reuer) will share various perspectives for conceptualizing the challenges and opportunities firms face in innovating around and appropriating value from enabling technologies. Part II will contain semi-structured, themed roundtable discussions between our distinguished panelists and participants who have submitted a short research proposal abstract. The round tables will be themed around the joint interests of the submitting participants and panelists. Participants will receive feedback and advice on their research from both the panelists as well as other participants. Prospective participants should apply to the PDW by submitting an abstract of a research idea/paper (no more than 300 words) to be explored with the panelists and other participants. Finally, in Part III, we will reconvene to summarize the theoretical and methodological themes emerging from each roundtable. Each roundtable leader will report back to the room. We will then assemble the list of ideas and future research questions for subsequent public dissemination.

To participate in the round table discussion, please fill in this form by Monday, July 1, 2024: https://forms.gle/1DeaFFT975ir2mys8 . Acceptance notifications will be sent by mid-July. If you have any questions, please contact Subrina Shen(subrina.shen@utexas.edu) or Nur Ahmed (nura@uark.edu).

    best,

    Subrina Shen and Nur Ahmed
