FERC 2020 will be held at the Delray Beach Marriott in Delray Beach, Florida. This luxury, resort-style hotel offers a newly renovated on-site spa and several outdoor pools for your enjoyment. Located footsteps from the Atlantic Ocean (it is literally across the street), this location offers family-friendly beachfront activities and the ability to wander along stylish Atlantic Avenue to visit a host of upscale boutiques, art galleries, bars, restaurants, and exciting nightlife. USA Today has named Atlantic Avenue one of the "10 great American shopping streets." The conference will feature a three-hour dinner cruise along the Intercostal Waterway aboard the triple-decked Lady Atlantic. Also, be sure to pack your tackiest island wear to compete for great prizes in the "Ugliest Hawaiian Shirt" contest!

Please remember that South Florida is WARM/HOT (depending on your perspective) the last week of May. High daily temperatures will typically exceed 85°F (29°C). We want you to explore the great location, and you won't want to be walking around wearing a suit or a tie. As such, we fully encourage all attendees to consider this a CASUAL conference. Dress like the locals – meaning bring your shorts, flip-flops, and shades.  Please leave your business attire at home!

2020 FERC RESEARCH SEMINAR FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS AND JUNIOR FACULTY

    CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

    DEADLINE: February, 2nd, 2020

    Schedule

This exclusive seminar will be held as follows:

    Thursday, May 28                8:30 am - 5:30 pm        Research Seminars 1 – 4

Friday, May 29                     8:30 am - 10:00 am       Paper Development Session

    Preparation and Seminar Requirements

Different from other doctoral or junior faculty consortia you may have attended, the FERC Research Seminar will be a reading-intensive seminar where renowned scholars from family business will lead sessions that are much like traditional doctoral seminars. A list of readings for each seminar session will be provided to each accepted attendee.

To capitalize on this opportunity, students must complete the readings ahead of time. In the weeks preceding this one-day intensive session, students will read a set of articles and prepare notes of their reading. The notes will consist of brief article summaries and at least two discussion questions per session. This will ensure the readings are completed in advance. The notes and questions submitted will be used to formulate discussion questions and other course planning. Please plan to submit reading notes and discussion questions electronically as follows:

    May 9, 2020, 5 PM EDT       Session 1 and 2 Notes

    May 16, 2020, 5 PM EDT     Session 3 and 4 Notes

    Important Note

The paper must be a full manuscript but NOT (a) exceed 35 pages (all inclusive), or (b) be an accepted for-publication or published manuscript. The working paper is a key requirement for admission. If you would like this paper to be considered for presentation during a conference poster session, it must be submitted through the traditional conference submission process as well (see call for papers).

A submission package (submitted as a single PDF file) must include the following three documents and should be sent via an e-mail attachment in PDF format to dholt@lsu.edu:

    2020 FERC PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

    CALL FOR PROPOSALS

    DEADLINE: February 2nd, 2020

Consistent with its mission to increase the quality and rigor of family business research, the Family Enterprise Research Conference (FERC) is accepting submissions for professional development workshops (PDW). Patterned after the highly successful and valuable PDWs sessions held at the Academy of Management annual meeting, FERC will set aside a limited number of sessions devoted to the professional development of family business scholars.

Proposed PDWs should benefit family business scholars regardless of their career stage. Proposals for sessions which teach new skills or provide unique developmental experiences are encouraged. PDWs are not meant to substitute for the conferences' traditional research/poster sessions. Instead, PDWs should be innovative in their content and structure, explore cutting edge issues, and encourage interactions among participants that are not normally part of the current FERC experience.

A wide variety of session structures are possible, including workshops, breakout sessions, tutorials, or panels. Submitters should strongly consider the structure of the session and think about how ideas, knowledge and relationships among the participants are best fostered. Sessions that engage attendees, and facilitate and continue exchanges among participants after the session are especially encouraged.

Proposals will be evaluated based on several criteria, including the anticipated benefit to attendees, the number of attendees likely to be interested in the topic, and the quality of the plan for creating an interactive and engaging session.

    Submission Process

A submission package (submitted as a single PDF file)  must include the following information and should be sent via an e-mail attachment in pdf format to Pramodita Sharma (Pramodita.Sharma@uvm.edu).

    1) A one-page vita from the PDW organizer, and from all other participants responsible for the content and delivery of the PDW session.

    2) A brief (no more than 5 page, double space proposal) which details: 1) the topic and its importance to family business scholars; 2) how much time will the session require and the structure/format/timeline of the session (i.e., how will the time be used), 3) the intended objectives of the session. Any special requests in terms of set-up, equipment, etc. should also be included in the proposal.

If you have questions or would like to discuss your workshop idea with FERC conference organizers, please contact Pramodita Sharma (Pramodita.Sharma@uvm.edu).
