Do CEOs receive the pay they deserve? Using a novel analytical approach, our leading article from Aguinis, Gomez-Mejia, Martin, O'Boyle and Joo analyses CEO pay vs CEO performance in US firms. Their findings uncover that the top performing CEO's are not the top earning CEO's. The implications of the study are discussed and challenged by nine written commentaries by Martin J. Conyon, Donald C. Hambrick, Michael A. Hitt, Katalin Takacs Haynes, Adam J. Wowak, Michael J. Mannor, Patrick M. Wright, Anthony J. Nyberg, Robert M. Wiseman, Hadi Faqihi, Albert A. Cannella, Jr., Valerie Sy, Gerald E. Ledford, Edward E. Lawler, James P. Walsh, B. Joseph White, and Jeffrey R. Edwards.
These focus on understanding why CEO pay and CEO performance are decoupled and what this means for global businesses. Does this have positive or negative implications? Is this the only way it can be? The debate has already started in first issue, Volume 16, of Management Research.
