The Entrepreneurship in the Population (EPOP) Survey project, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago with support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, has completed its third wave of data collection. The new EPOP:2024 data are now publicly available along with the prior EPOP:2022 and EPOP:2023 data releases.
There are multiple ways to access the EPOP:2024 and learn about the latest results:
è Interact with and compare the 2022, 2023, and 2024 results using the data dashboard which shows changes over time at the state and metropolitan statistical area levels.
è Download the Public Use data files.
è Apply for the Restricted Use data files.
è Read about Research Findings on topics including the business ownership experience for immigrants and minorities, serial entrepreneurship, and gig worker characteristics.
Other exciting announcements about EPOP include:
è NORC's latest Research Brief on EPOP:2024 data reveals that American entrepreneurs mostly self-finance their new businesses with personal assets and credit cards, rather than relying on banks or the government.
è New Microbusinesses Owner questions were added to the EPOP:2024 questionnaire regarding business support services, financing needs beyond startup, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies like generative AI. This data is included in the EPOP:2024 Public Use file. (Questions funded by the Association for Enterprise Opportunity (AEO).

· The Entrepreneurship in the Population (EPOP) Survey is a publicly available resource for understanding the scope of entrepreneurial activities across the United States. The EPOP Survey includes a variety of measures of entrepreneurial activity providing policymakers and researchers with current information about the experiences and perceptions of entrepreneurs across the nation. The results support estimation at the state and major metropolitan area levels.
· The EPOP Survey uses a nationally representative sample to measure current and former business ownership, whether individuals are currently taking or have in the past taken steps towards starting a business, and the extent to which individuals engage in freelance work or participate in the "gig economy." In addition to providing a characteristic profile of the individuals involved in these various entrepreneurial activities across the U.S., the survey serves as a resource for understanding the motivations, actions, and challenges faced by individuals during the entrepreneurial process and the resources available to them.
