Strategic Organization: Call for Special Issue Proposals

  • 1.  Strategic Organization: Call for Special Issue Proposals

    Posted 30 days ago

Strategic Organization (SO) is cordially inviting proposals for one or multiple special issues.

Traditionally, SO publishes one special issue per year on topics at the intersection of strategy and organization theory. The latest special included Research Frontiers on the Attention-Based View of the Firm, Categories and Place: Materiality, Identities and Movements, and Temporal Work - The Strategic Organization of Time. Forthcoming special issues include "Impact Driven Strategy Research for Grand Challenges," "Intelligent Organizing," and "Collective Strategy."

Proposals should be in line with the aims and scope of SO. In less than 2,500 words (including references; shorter proposal can of course be submitted as well), proposals should lay out:

    • The motivation and interest of the general topic of the special issue

    • Why the topic warrants a special issue, now

    • Why the special issue topic is a particular fit to SO

    • Potential themes of and research questions relevant to the special issue

    • Short biographies (<100 words) of the proposal authors

    • (Intended) handling editor at SO and preliminary timeline (see more below)

Proposals may further be extended by a list of scholars that represent potential contributors to the special issue (does not count toward word limit).

Each special issue needs to have an editing team that includes at least one of the current SO editors (as of now: Oliver Alexy, Charlotte Cloutier, David Gomulya, Matthew Kraatz, Caterina Moschieri, Margarethe Wiersema). We strongly encourage authors to reach out to editors before submitting a proposal to identify a handling editor.

We further encourage authors to highlight the preliminary timeline of their special issue. As of now, we invite submissions for a special issue to be published in 2028. Given SO's strict one-major-revision only policy, a suggested timeline might look like this:

    • Official call for papers: May 2025

    • Submission deadline: January-March 2026

    • First reviewing round completed: July-August 2026

    • Second reviewing round completed: April 2027

    • Potential minor revisions with editors completed: September 2027

    • All papers accepted and editorial introduction ready: October 2027

    • Publication: February 2028

A first deadline for evaluation will be December 1, 2024. Decisions will be made by the entire editorial team. We will further evaluate proposals incoming after this date on a rolling basis. Please submit all proposals via email to strategic.organization@mgt.tum.de. You can also direct your questions there, or approach individual editors. We also welcome expressions of interests or draft proposals, on which we are happy to provide feedback before a more formal submission.

We are looking forward to receiving your proposals, and thank you for your consideration.

The SO Editorial Team: Oliver Alexy, Charlotte Cloutier, David Gomulya, Matthew Kraatz, Caterina Moschieri, Margarethe Wiersema
