This talk will illuminate how entrepreneurship has transformed from a commercial endeavor into an ideology that informs us how we organize work, educate ourselves, and perceive social interactions. What motivates this study is the increasing prominence in popular and academic literature of a global emphasis on entrepreneurship as a way of framing social perceptions. The concept of entrepreneurship as an organizing principle is now manifest in the business community leading to; recruiting workers as independent agents working on a common task to be paid only if successful; acquisition tournaments for new product development, and labor practices that shift the burden of continuity onto the employee. This discussion with trace the history of employee relationships to uncover and illuminate the entrepreneurialism that our world has embraced to justify and explain inequality.

About the speaker
Robert Eberhart is the Associate Director of Research of the entrepreneurship and society project at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He earned his Ph.D. in Management Science from Stanford University and his academic publications span topics such as new theoretical constructs on how institutional change has complex effects on new firms and how entrepreneurship is changing society. He is the founder of the project on entrepreneurship and society that this talk describes. His publications have appeared in Organization Science, the Strategic Management Journal, Strategy Science, and others. His papers have won numerous awards including his 2017 paper in Organization Science that won a Responsible Research in Business and Management award for 2020.
