Dear all,
For this year's SMS Annual Conference in Istanbul, we are organizing a morning workshop on AI and organizational design sponsored by Behavioral Strategy, Corporate Strategy, and Strategic Human Capital Interest Groups. The workshop consists of two parts, a panel discussion and the breakout session. If you are interested in participating in the breakout session, complete a simple application outlining their interests in AI and organization design to be allocated into breakout groups! The deadline for application is August 30, 2024 here: Application Submission Link
In the first part of the workshop, open to walk-ins, we will have a panel discussion with a group of leading scholars in the domain of artificial intelligence (AI) and organization design. This panel discussion will center around how Artificial Intelligence (AI) will impact how firms organize to undertake their relevant activities. For example, does greater use of AI lead to firms being more decentralized and greater autonomy being placed in the hands of more junior employees or will it be the opposite with power being centralized between a few senior managers having access to all a firm's information aided by sophisticated AI systems? Ultimately organization design involves differentiation and integration, AI across an organization can enable managers to integrate the efforts of their employees more effectively as well as monitor their performances more closely enabling more finely tuned differentiation. The moderated discussion will cover how firms are currently using AI to adjust their organizational designs and look forward to whether AI is likely to lead to more centralization or decentralization of organizations. Our panelists for this part include:
Phanish Puranam (INSEAD)
Raj Choudhury (HBS)
Nan Jia (USC)
Milan Miric (USC)
Matthew Bidwell (Wharton)
In the second part of the workshop, pre-registered attendees will be divided into multiple break-out groups to discuss and develop ideas pertaining to different elements of AI and organization design with the goal of stimulating interesting research questions which can be tackled using a variety of different methods. At the end of this session, a designated participant will share their group's ideas with the broader audience. Our roundtable facilitators include:
John Eklund (USC)
Amy Zhao-Ding (TUM)
Phanish Puranam (INSEAD)
