    Dear Colleagues:

With apologies for cross-postings, I want to share the following call with you. Each year SMA organizes three doctoral student consortia (prospective/pre-doc, early stage, and late stage) that aim to encourage and equip our discipline's future scholars. If you are a current or prospective doc student, please do consider whether one of these programs may provide value in your journey. Similarly, if you know of any current or prospective doc students, I hope you'll share:

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: Southern Management Association (SMA) 2021 Early Stage, Late Stage, and Pre-Doctoral Consortia

The Annual Doctoral Consortia hosted by the Southern Management Association (SMA), will be held at the Hotel Monteleone, New Orleans, LA on November 2-3, 2021 as part of the Annual Meetings.

    Early and Late-Stage Consortia

SMA hosts two consortia for current doctoral students, one for students in the early stages of their doctoral program and one for students who have advanced past the comprehensive exam stage. Topics vary, but both consortia are day-long programs designed to provide a better understanding of key factors underlying faculty success in research, teaching, and service. The consortia also emphasize opportunities for students to network and begin the process of integrating themselves into the profession. The program will feature nationally recognized scholars who will lead sessions on significant issues of research, teaching, and professional service.  Each session provides time for questions and discussion.

SMA will award $500 stipends to participants. Students must attend the entire program to receive the stipend.  Breakfast and lunch the day of the Consortia will be provided, courtesy of SMA. Due to the popularity of the Doctoral Consortia, all applications should be submitted by June 1st, 2021.  All applicants must complete and submit the registration form found here:

SMA 2021 Doctoral Consortia Student Application Form.

Also, applicants should have their Ph.D. coordinator endorse their nomination via the link below. Please note that applications without Ph.D. coordinators' endorsement will not be considered so be sure to forward this link to your Ph.D. Program Coordinator.

SMA 2021 Doctoral Consortia Ph.D. Coordinator Nomination Form

For the early stage consortium, preference will be given to students in the first or second year of their doctoral programs; for the late stage consortium, preference is given to students who are in their dissertation phase. SMA especially welcomes students who have not previously attended a SMA Doctoral Consortium. Multiple students from one program may be admitted if space is available. To facilitate this process, where there are multiple applicants from a single program, the Ph.D. coordinator must rank order applicants for selection to the consortium.

For questions about the early or late stage consortia, please email Don Kluemper at kluemper@uic.edu

    Pre-Doctoral Consortium

SMA hosts a pre-doctoral consortium to provide professional advice for those strongly considering attending a doctoral program in Management or a related field. The consortium will include nationally recognized scholars, coordinators of Ph.D. programs, and current students who will provide insight into key topics including the application process, expectations of doctoral students, student-doctoral program fit, and careers in academia.

In addition, opportunities for networking with current doctoral students, faculty, and PhD program directors are built into the program. SMA will provide breakfast and lunch on the day of the consortium as well. To provide more encouragement, SMA is awarding $500 stipends to help with travel expenses (see note below).

To apply, students should use the link below and fill out the application form by June 15, 2021. As part of the application, students will need to join the Southern Management Association (SMA). They will also need to upload a short letter of interest and a current CV or resume as well as provide contact information for a faculty reference. Application letters can be brief but should state why the students want to attend the consortium and discuss how it will help them accomplish their career goals.

Please submit questions about the pre-doctoral student consortium to Dr. Justice Tillman, Baruch College, City University of New York, at Justice.Tillman@baruch.cuny.edu.

Note: Stipends for the pre-doctoral consortium are awarded competitively to up to 20 participants; a limited number of additional seats for non-funded participants may be available. Participants must attend the entire one-day consortium program in order to receive their funding.
