Leading the Integration of Faith and Entrepreneurship (L.I.F.E.) Research Conference
1st Annual Conference on Faith & Entrepreneurship
    April 8, 2021
Miami University | Farmer School of Business | John W. Altman Institute for Entrepreneurship
    Virtual Meeting

The Department of Entrepreneurship, the John W. Altman Institute for Entrepreneurship, and the Leading the Integration of Faith and Entrepreneurship (L.I.F.E.) Research Lab in the Farmer School of Business at Miami University are proud to sponsor the 1st Annual Leading the Integration of Faith and Entrepreneurship (L.I.F.E.) Research Conference.

The L.I.F.E. Research Conference, directed this year by Dr. Brett Smith, the Cintas Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Miami University, is one of the first international conferences to advance research at the intersection of faith and entrepreneurship. Building on increased academic research activity and extensive interest from participants in the PDW on faith and entrepreneurship at last year's Social Entrepreneurship Conference, the L.I.F.E. Research Conference is designed to advance the research conversation of the relationship between religious faith and entrepreneurship. While the role of faith is recognized is a central element to most of the world's population, research has generally neglected this important conversation, some important exceptions notwithstanding.

Leading scholars from around the world-including Ted Baker, Lowell Busenitz, Melissa Cardon, Dawn DeTienne, Elaine Hollensbe, Jeff Hornsby, Peter Klein, Tom Lumpkin, Jeff McMullen, Kent Miller, Mitchell Neubert, Roy Suddaby, and David Townsend among others-will come together for a day to discuss how to advance this research conversation. The goal of the conversation is to advance practically relevant, academically rigorous research toward publication in premiere entrepreneurship and management journals. The format of the online conference will include a combination of keynote presentations and panel discussions to explore key themes at the intersection of faith and entrepreneurship.

Keynote presentations will open and close the conference. The opening keynote presentation will feature Jeff McMullen, David H. Jacobs Chair in Strategic Entrepreneurship in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Business Venturing. The closing keynote presentation will feature Roy Suddaby, the Winspear Chair of Management in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria, Professor of Management at the Carson College of Business, Washington State University, and Professor and Chair in Organisation Studies at the University of Liverpool Management School. In addition, scholars have curated panel discussions on six research themes at the intersection of faith and entrepreneurship. Each panel session consists of a conversation between five panelists with different perspectives to exchange views on a relevant and current topic with one of the panelists serving as facilitator of the discussion and with active and engaged interaction with audience members in the discussion as well.

    Research themes include:

    • Identity: Challenges and Opportunities
    • How Does Faith Encourage, Suppress, or Change Entrepreneurship?
    • Entrepreneurship and Faith: A Diversity of Religious Perspectives
    • How Integration Reframes Religious and Entrepreneurial Antecedents, Processes, and Outcomes
    • Faith and Entrepreneurship Through the Lens of Sociology and Strategy
    • Challenges and Opportunities of Publishing Faith-Related Research in Premiere Journals
