    Call for Papers & Ideas
Academy of International Business Western Europe

    Workshop
    "The Future of Global Mobility"

University of Goettingen, Germany, 6 March 2020

    Co-chairs:
Fabian Jintae Froese (University of Goettingen)
Vittoria G. Scalera (Amsterdam Business School, University of Amsterdam)

    Submission deadline: 15 December 2019

    Topic:

An increasing number of organizations and people cross borders. The UN estimates the number of immigrants at around 250 million people, while other statistics report around 60 million expatriates, i.e. highly skilled individuals working abroad. Organizations and individuals can obtain tremendous benefits from relocation, e.g. learning and innovation, increased performance, career opportunities. On the other hand, expatriation is costly and difficult. Thus, substantial research has investigated the antecedents and outcomes of expatriation. While this line of research has revealed important insights, a lot is not known yet and deserves further attention. This workshop will gather great minds to discuss and shape the future of global mobility research. We particular invite established and junior researchers from various disciplines to join the debate.

    Purpose:

The purpose of this workshop is to gather a group of established and emerging scholars, including doctoral students, to discuss the state of the art and develop ideas for future research in global mobility. We also plan to publish selected articles in a special issue in an esteemed journal (to be confirmed).

    Workshop format:

This event is organized as a workshop. In addition to keynote speeches and a panel by established scholars from different disciplines, we will break into smaller groups to have two rounds of discussion. In Round 1, (junior) scholars can briefly introduce their work and receive feedback from experienced scholars, and in Round 2, participants will discuss about ideas for future directions in global mobility research.

    Keynote speakers:

    • Sebastian Reiche, IESE and associate editor of Human Resource Management Journal
    • Guenter Stahl, WU Vienna and associate editor of Journal of World Business

    Panel session speakers:

    • Maike Andresen, University of Bamberg, GLOMO project coordinator, and associate editor of International Journal of HRM
    • Dries Faems, WHU and former general editor of Journal of Management Studies
    • Sabine Hess, University of Goettingen and director of the Centre of Migration Studies
    • Francesco Lissoni, University of Bordeaux and former associate editor of Industry & Innovation
    • Alessandra Perri (chair), Ca' Foscari University of Venice and guest editor of Journal of World Business

    Your submission and contribution:

We invite you to join our workshop. We welcome people from different disciplinary backgrounds. All participants are expected to provide us with keywords and abstracts of no more than 200 words about ideas for future research directions in global mobility. What areas within global mobility deserve more research attention? Based on your ideas, we will group participants into discussion groups during our workshop to discuss the future of global mobility. In addition, you may submit one research paper or work-in-progress paper. Papers should follow the style guidelines of the Journal of International Business Studies: http://www.jibs.net/. If selected, you can briefly introduce your paper and receive feedback from established researchers in discussion round tables during Round 1 of our workshop.

Submission deadline for research ideas (required for all) and papers (optional): 15 December 2019. Please submit your documents to Julia Schmid, juliasophie.schmid@uni-goettingen.de. If you have any questions, please contact Fabian Jintae Froese: ffroese@uni-goettingen.de .

Registration fee of 80 Euro will cover coffee breaks, lunch, dinner etc. on 6 March 2020. Since this is an official AIB Western Europe Chapter event, all participants need to be/become members of the Academy of International Business: https://aib.msu.edu/ .

    Location:

The workshop will take place at the University of Goettingen, Germany: http://www.uni-goettingen.de/. The University of Goettingen was founded in 1737, and is a highly reputed German university. More than 45 Nobel Prize laureates are associated with the university. The city of Goettingen is a typical European university town, i.e. a small city with a historical and beautiful downtown. The nearest airports are Hannover (1-hour train ride) and Frankfurt (2h). For the workshop, we will use the historical observatory of Carl-Friedrich Gauss, a mathematician (e.g. Gaussian curve) and former professor of the University of Goettingen.

    Best regards,
    Vittoria
