    ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

    Experimental designs provide a powerful lens to determine causality. However, relatively few entrepreneurship studies use an experimental design. Recently, several calls have been made for more experimental studies in entrepreneurship research (e.g., Acs, Audretsch, Desai, & Welpe, 2010; Aguinis & Lawal, 2012; Hsu, Simmons, & Wieland, 2017), and leading journals in the field, such as the Journal of Business Venturing and Entrepreneurship Education & Pedagogy have developed special issues on using experimental methodologies (e.g., Costa, Santos, Schenkel, Tegtmeier, & Hytti, 2021; Williams, Wood, Mitchell, & Urbig, 2019).

    In this paper development workshop (PDW), we aim to support scholars who are working on experiments as a methodology in entrepreneurship research.

    Although studies using experimental designs are a great way to establish causal relations, designing, conducting, and analyzing experiments is not an easy undertaking. To support early career scholars  in this endeavor, the University of Groningen Centre of Entrepreneurship (UGCE) organizes a paper development workshop in partnership with the European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB). In this workshop, we aim to support and bring together early career scholars who are working with experimental designs as a methodology in entrepreneurship research.

    The workshop consists of two main activities: 1) Paper presentations, discussions and lively interactions with peers and experts (in breakout rooms); and 2) Plenary keynote sessions, where experts will address challenges in designing and conducting research using experimental designs.

    The keynote speakers of this edition will be:

    Dr. Basil Englis (Berry College, U.S.A.)

    Dr. Sharon Simmons (Jackson State University, U.S.A.)

    Dr. Matthew Wood (Baylor University, U.S.A.)

    Additionally, the Guest Editors of the Special Issue "Experimental Designs to Address Current Challenges in Entrepreneurship Education Research" in the journal Entrepreneurship Education and Pedagogy, Dr. Sílvia Costa, Dr. Susana Santos, Dr. Mark Schenkel and Dr. Silke Tegtmeier will be Workshop Facilitators, providing feedback on participants' work.

    For a full overview of speakers and workshop facilitators, please see the workshop website.

    During this workshop you will:

    1.      Receive individualized feedback from peers and experts on your working paper;

    2.     Increase your knowledge of conducting experiments, focusing on best practices and on mistakes to avoid;

    3.     Develop your network with other scholars conducting research using similar methodological approaches as yourself. Several experts in the field of entrepreneurship will closely work with participants on their working papers.

    4.     Several experts in the field of entrepreneurship will be present at the workshop and will closely work with you on your working paper. We are organizing Speed Meetings between participants and Workshop Facilitators for brief one-on-one discussions about your work!

    FOR WHOM?

    The workshop is targeted at PhD candidates, postdocs, and (early-stage) Assistant Professors working on studies in entrepreneurship research using experimental designs. The submissions can be co-authored (with senior scholars), but the leading author and potential participant of the workshop should be an early-career researcher. Working papers will be selected based on both the theoretical contribution to the field and the rigor of the implementation of experimental methods.

    Limited spots are available! With a small group setting, all participants will have the opportunity to present their work and receive both peer and expert feedback on their working papers.

    SUBMISSIONS

    To apply for participation in the workshop, please submit your work until January 7, 2022. We welcome two types of submissions:

    A.    Full working paper: studies that have been fully carried out and the paper is at the writing stage.

    If you have conducted an experiment and would like to receive guidance on how to, for instance, report your study and improve its story line, argumentation, address the suitability of the analyses or reporting of the results, we welcome your submission as a full working paper. Please follow these submission guidelines for your working paper:

    §  Full working paper - max 40 pages (excl. title page, reference list, figures and tables), Times New Roman font, size 12, double line spacing;

    §  Please indicate clearly the goals of the study, the theoretical contribution, methodology, (preliminary) results and brief discussion including the contribution of the paper;

    §  On the title page, please indicate clearly the title of the working paper, authors' names and affiliation, and "Full Working Paper";

    §  Please end the paper with one separate paragraph referring to two key issues you are facing with this paper and on which you would like to receive feedback during the workshop.

    B.    Design stage papers: studies at the methodological design phase.

    If you are currently designing a study where you will use experimental design methods and you are seeking guidance on, for instance making sure the design is sound and robust, we welcome your submission as a design stage paper. Please note that you must have a research idea, research question, theoretical contribution, and basic study design for your submission to be considered. To submit your extended abstract, please follow these guidelines:

    §  Extended Abstract - max. 6 pages (excl. title page and reference list), Times New Roman font, size 12, 1.5 line spacing;

    §  On the title page, please indicate clearly the title of the research design proposal, authors' names and affiliation, and "Design Stage Paper";

    §  In the extended abstract, please indicate clearly the goals of the study, the theoretical contribution, and describe the design and methods you are currently considering, in terms of procedures, manipulation (if present) and measures;

    §  Please end the extended abstract with one paragraph referring to two key issues you are facing regarding the proposed study, on which you would like to receive feedback during the workshop.

    All submissions should be submitted via the website (click on "submissions").
