The Special Issue of Small Business Economics on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Entrepreneurship, that David Audretsch and I co-edited, is now online.
More than one year ago, we had asked entrepreneurship scholars to submit empirical and conceptual papers related to AI and Big Data. While the disruptive potential of AI and Big Data has been receiving growing attention and concern in a variety of research and application fields over the last few years, it has not received much scrutiny in contemporary entrepreneurship research so far. This Special Issue provides an overview where the field stands (e.g., potential but also significant challenges and open questions). The 8 articles included in the final Special Issue (links and doi's below) cover a broad range of topics - for example firm growth, social media, language-based machine learning and regional culture, decision-making, effectuation and design principles, success of crowdfunding campaigns, demand dynamics for entrepreneurial skills, and news coverage of entrepreneurship. This underscores the broad relevance of AI and Big Data for many subfields of entrepreneurship research. Our introductory article (open access link below) provides a structured overview, central definitions, and a discussion of potential future scenarios how AI and Big Data, and the rapid technological progress, might disrupt both entrepreneurship research (methods, infrastructure, focus) and entrepreneurship practice (e.g., "smart entrepreneurship"). We hope you will find the Special Issue interesting and useful. Introductory article:
