IE University Announces Research Initiative on Policy & Management in the Digital Economy

The new research initiative is a two-year project financially supported by Facebook and independently run by IE University.

A new research initiative at IE University will focus on management in the digital economy and examine its advancement, interaction with public policy, hurdles, and next steps as well as opportunities for study. The IE University Research Initiative on Policy & Management in the Digital Economy is a two-year project financially supported by Facebook and will be led by IE Business School Professor Julio De Castro, Chair of the PhD Program. By bringing together academics, public policy experts, and practitioners, the initiative aims to promote in-depth analysis of the advancements and in the digital economy, as well as the management and guidance of those changes.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has crystalized how quickly technology can impact the economy and society," says Arturo González, Facebook Director of Advocacy and Research. "Researchers throughout Europe are rapidly expanding the frontier of knowledge about the digital economy, and IE University will ensure policy makers, industry experts, and other researchers are informed about these important state-of-the-art studies."

The initiative will include workshops, a conference, and a book that will bring together the findings and recommendations of the initial meetings. The first four workshops will be conducted in a hybrid model between top scholars and policymakers in the digital economy and will focus on the following:

    ·        Innovation in the new digital environment

    ·        New ventures and the digital economy

    ·        Platforms and the mechanics of digital access for firms and individuals

    ·        Sustainability and economic development in the digital environment

The first of these workshops, on innovation in the new digital environment, will be livestreamed on June 16th. The event will include the following:

    ·        Marco Giarratana, IE University Vice-Rector of Research (Moderator)

    ·        Michael Bailey, Facebook Research Science Manager at Facebook

    ·        Annamaria Conti, HEC Lausanne Professor and Co-Editor of the Journal of Economics & Management Strategy

    ·        Luis Diestre, IE Business School Professor

    ·        Gianluca Favalli, Innovation Manager at IEE S.A.

    ·        Andrea Fosfuri, Bocconi University Professor and Associate Editor of Management Science

    ·        Eliana Garcés, Director of Economic Policy at Facebook

    ·        Martina Pasquini, IE Business School Assistant Professor

    ·        Ammon Salter, University of Bath and Co-Editor of Research Policy

    ·        Konstantina Valogianni, IE Business School Assistant Professor

"The IE University Research Initiative on Policy & Management in the Digital Economy will serve as a European-based beachhead for the scholarly examination of the digital economy, of which the speed of change requires not only high quality research but new approaches to that research, in the accessing, decoding, and theorizing upon new data and sources," said Professor De Castro. "Furthermore, various regions and countries approach the digital economy in different ways, for example regulatory measures, and this has global implications. Understanding this interconnectivity from a scholarly perspective is key to ushering advances in this area."

Additional workshops, still to be announced, will examine new ventures and the digital economy, in particular small and medium enterprises, digital ecosystems and platforms and the mechanics of digital access for firms and individuals, and sustainability and economic development in the digital environment.
