Replacing Seat Time: Teaching Strategy in Hybrid and Online-Only Formats
    STR Teaching PDW 2019
    Program Session: 308

STR, together with TIM, will sponsor its annual Teaching PDW during the pre-conference period of the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in Boston.

     Saturday, Aug 10 2019 8:00AM - 10:00AM
    Boston Park Plaza in Terrace

This PDW features innovative approaches to teaching strategy using hybrid and online classes. We seek to provide PDW participants with an overview of the basic principles and challenges in teaching strategy in hybrid (face-to-face blended with online) as well as online-only settings.

The primary objectives of this PDW are twofold. First, it will introduce and provide short demonstrations of teaching hybrid and online classes, distinguishing between undergraduate, masters and executive level teaching as well as between synchronous and asynchronous classes in the case of online teaching. Second, it will provide participants with the opportunity to engage with our highly experienced presenters during an interactive Q&A to learn how to replace seat time with online teaching in their own courses. The PDW will conclude with summary comments from the presenters and organizers.

    Expert Faculty:

Presenter: Glenn Hoetker, Melbourne Business School, U. of Melbourne

Presenter: Chris Bingham, U. of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Presenter: Anu Wadhwa, Imperial College Business School

    Academic Technology Expert:

Presenter: Lynn Greenough, Oregon State U.

    Questions addressed include:

    • What are effective ways to blend online teaching with face-to-face classes for teaching strategy?
    • Which materials are best to leave to online teaching and which ones are best kept in the face-to-face part of a course?
    • What are the main challenges of teaching hybrid classes in undergraduate, masters and executive level classes?
    • What are effective ways to design an online-only course to teach strategy at the undergraduate, masters, and executive levels?
    • Which software (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas) and tools can be used for teaching strategy online?
    • What are the advantages and disadvantages of asynchronous versus synchronous online classes?
    • What are effective ways to increase engagement in online classes?
    • What are best practices for facilitating live sessions online?
    • What are effective ways to design different types of discussion forums, taking into account engaging discussion prompts, grading considerations, and instructor presence in discussion forums?

Pre-registration is not necessary, but we suggest arriving early as we have limited seating!

We hope you can join us in Boston!
