    The Position

The TUM School of Management at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany, is currently inviting applications for an open rank position in family business. This position is endowed by the EQUA Foundation. We are particularly encouraging applications from international candidates.

Munich is uniquely positioned as one of Europe's leading industrial and entrepreneurial hubs, and TUM is of one of the top technological universities in the world. The TUM School of Management also operates a campus in the city of Heilbronn, in area well-known for its "hidden champions" – family firms, often in engineering-related industries, that are world-market leaders in their respective sectors.

Drawing on this rich environment, the successful candidate will find themselves ideally positioned to research, teach, and reach out to various stakeholders on topics such as family firm governance, culture, socio-emotional wealth, or succession planning and management, to name a few. Candidates from diverse backgrounds, such as economics, management, psychology, or sociology are encouraged to apply, with high-caliber experience across these disciplines being a clear plus. We invite applicants to highlight how their research and teaching would be complementary to ongoing activities in a (management-related) department of their choosing. To support their research, the candidate may further choose to join one of our many active research centers, such as the Global Center for Family Enterprise or the Munich Center for Technology in Society.

For all ranks, we expect pedagogical aptitude, including the ability to teach in English, significant international experience, and an active, extensive international research network. Research ability will be evaluated according to academic rank, with Assistant Professors having shown credible promise to produce internationally leading work, Associate Professors showing evidence of doing so at some regularity, and Full Professor being recognized leaders in their field. More senior candidates may also showcase their ability and willingness to contribute to executive education and acquire competitive third-party funding.

    The University

Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of Europe's top universities. It is committed to excellence in research and teaching, interdisciplinary education and the active promotion of promising young academics. The spectrum of subjects is unique in Europe, ranging from natural sciences and engineering to medical, life and business sciences, with the most recently introduced TUM School of Governance. TUM's interdisciplinary research platforms play a substantial role in developing new technologies, designing new products, and creating new business models. TUM is the first German university with an international campus in Singapore (TUM Asia), and is represented in the world through liaison offices across five continents. TUM is regularly highly positioned across a number of international rankings:

    • Excellence in working with students – #6 in the world (Global Employability Rankings)
    • Excellence in research - among top 50 globally (THE, Shanghai Ranking), top 1-2 in Germany
    • Excellence in entrepreneurship and innovation - best in supporting entrepreneurship among large German universities, with largest number of founders in Germany being TUM Alumni (German Startup Monitor) and #4 among Europe's most innovative universities (Reuters ranking); #9 in Europe for M.Sc. programs with an Entrepreneurship focus
    • One of the first in Germany to be named a University of Excellence

Based on international standards and transparent performance criteria, TUM offers a merit-based academic career option for tenure track faculty, to advance from an Assistant Professor position through a permanent position as an Associate Professor, and on to the Full Professor. All professors gain a status of public servants in Germany ("Beamte"), which carries attractive tax-related and social benefits, with a generous pension scheme. The regulations of the TUM Faculty Recruitment and Career System apply and can be accessed here (https://www.tum.de/en/about-tum/working-at-tum/faculty-recruiting/tum-faculty-tenure-track/). As a public university, TUM's base salaries are determined by the State of Bavaria – overall compensation is negotiable and commensurate with experience. The TUM Munich Dual Career Office provides career consulting to the partners of newly appointed faculty as well as relocation and integration services.

    The School and the Department

Grounded in TUM's technological and entrepreneurial ecosystem, the TUM School of Management (http://www.wi.tum.de) educates responsible talents and pursues relevant research to advance innovation-based businesses and societies in Germany, Europe, and the world. In the 18 years since its establishment, ongoing commitment to world-class research and teaching at the interface between management and technology resulted in a triple-crown accreditation (AMBA, AACSB, EQUIS), bringing the school into the elite group of ~70 business schools in the world. The School has a rounded teaching portfolio, spanning undergraduate, master, EMBA, and doctoral programs. We attract students and researchers from all over the world and actively promote international collaboration and exchange. Further internationalization and even stronger international positioning are key in the School's strategic objectives for 2025. In both national and international rankings, the School of Management, and in particular the Innovation & Entrepreneurship department, rank first for their research output in Germany. The School has further recently been able to engage in a major expansion, supported by the Dieter-Schwarz-Foundation, which led to the creation of a new campus in the city of Heilbronn featuring an initial 13, and soon over 20 professors there, and an additional seven in Munich.

The successful applicant will be able to choose which department they would like to join (see https://www.wi.tum.de/faculty-research/academic-departments/), and is encouraged to indicate their respective wishes in the cover letter. Suffice it to say here, faculty across departments have published in all respective premier journals, such as ASQ, AMR, AMJ, SMJ, Management Science, and, beyond management, also for example in the Journal of Marketing or the Review of Financial Studies.

    The location

The city of Munich (1.5m inhabitants) is the capital of the State of Bavaria. In addition, Munich is one of the leading European hubs for technology entrepreneurship (ventures from TUM alone account for more than 10% of the entire venture capital deal-flow in Germany) and home to countless successful small and medium-sized firms in all industrial sectors ranging from the arts, food and beverages, material sciences-even to flying taxis! Thanks to its luscious green spaces, rich cultural offerings, and proximity to the Alps and many lakes, the city of Munich regularly features in rankings specifying the world's most livable cities (Mercer: #3; Monocle: #1).
