    Emerging Themes in Indigenous Business
    Inaugural Research Conference on Indigenous Matters
    Hosted by I.H. Asper School of Business, University of Manitoba
    The main goal of this inaugural Asper Research Conference on Indigenous Business is to encourage and present research that deepens our knowledge of Indigenous matters within the context of management studies. In recent years, Indigenous peoples have affirmed their rights in relation to land title, self-determination and full economic participation through the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (Graeme & Malone, 2013; Rodhouse & Vanclay, 2016; Yaffe, 2018). Recognizing the importance of sovereignty and self-determination for Indigenous peoples' economic well-being, this conference welcomes scholarly papers from a variety of disciplinary areas within business, including management, leadership, entrepreneurship, human resource management, finance, marketing, sustainability, history, ethics, and others. This includes the management of Indigenous owned and operated business, social enterprises, and other organizations. We welcome papers from a variety of empirical and theoretical perspectives, including Two Eyed Seeing (Colbourne et al., 2019), quantitative, and qualitative methods.
    Along with keynote and regular scholarly paper sessions, a distinctive feature of the conference will be a series of Round Table sessions, where leading Indigenous community members and scholars reflect on current and future research in the field. We plan to sponsor an annual conference, leading from this inaugural event, and would like the conference to become an important meeting place for research in this field, as scholars and the larger community consider important research questions to address in the coming years and decades. The goal is to showcase a diversity of research being done while at the same time developing an overarching community of colleagues and postgraduate students researching in the field.
    Paper Submission Procedure 
    Scholars who would like to present their research at the conference are asked to submit a 500-word abstract or completed paper no later than January 15, 2021. Papers accepted for presentation will be announced by February 1, 2021, at which time feedback from the conference organizers may also be provided. Papers accepted for presentation will be published in a Proceedings, unless authors instruct otherwise. Conference organizers are in on-going discussion with journal editors regarding the possibility of a Special Issue on the theme of Indigenous business, for which a subset of papers accepted for the conference would qualify for possible publication. Please submit your paper or up-to-2-page proposal to Jennifer.Moose@umanitoba.ca by January 15, 2021.
