JET-M Call for Papers on Emerging Transformative Technologies

  • 1.  JET-M Call for Papers on Emerging Transformative Technologies

The Journal of Engineering and Technology Management is creating a new format to encourage calls for research on emerging technologies that will likely have wide ranging, transformative societal implications.

The new format will combine two aspects already available to JET-M authors. The first phase will include a Perspectives submission that outlines the basic idea, the importance to the field of technology management and specific areas requiring further research. This initial submission will in turn will act as a Call for Papers for more extensive research studies on the topic that will be published together as an 'Emerging Transformative Technologies Special Focus'. Paper development workshops are encouraged.

The initial Perspective article is not intended to be a full research paper but rather a discussion note that seeks to identify important issues for significant emerging technologies that will likely transform society. Examples include, but are not limited to, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, language translation technologies, nanotechnology, gene editing, Internet of Things and data mining/analysis. Technologies specifically addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals1  and the so-called Societal Grand Challenges as supported by for example the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation2  are also encouraged.

Unlike regular research papers, the Perspectives submission does not require a strict scientific design but must place a strong emphasis on the importance of the topic for transformation and set directions for more rigorous studies. The paper should utilize an accessible and engaging writing style, and include both potential intended and unintended outcomes, positive and negative. Perspectives should be no more than 4,000 words (excluding references) and include a Call for Further Research. Authors are to indicate in the cover letter to the editors that the submission is to be considered for an 'Emerging Transformative Technologies Perspective'. The submission will be reviewed by the editorial team, and it is understood that authors whose papers are accepted will coordinate the reviews of the 'Emerging Transformative Technologies Special Focus', which is expected to result in 3 to 4 full research papers. These latter papers will follow the format of regular JET-M special issue submissions and be blind reviewed. Given the contemporary nature of the topics, it is highly recommended that paper development workshops are utilized to expedite the review process.

It is hoped that this new format will complement our regular articles by stimulating provocative academic discussions in emerging areas of technology management.
