Call for Papers - Changing Nature of Work: 2021 Paper Development Workshop

Stanford's Center for Work, Technology, and Organizations invites manuscript submissions for their 2nd Changing Nature of Work workshop taking place on Stanford's campus October 16 & 17, 2021*. A few years ago, we held a small workshop that was primarily focused on developing the field. This follow-on workshop will be focused on research and paper development since there are now many more scholars working in this space. This research development workshop will focus on improving works-in-process and advancing the study of emerging technologies and the changing nature of work. Our intent is to provide an opportunity for participants from all levels of academia to share and receive feedback on their developing manuscripts. It will be relatively small, with the expectation of less than 20 papers accepted.

The nature of work is constantly changing, particularly how emerging technologies interact with work and organizations. Recent shifts include the integration of technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, robotics, blockchain, and 3D printing, as well as recent changes in remote work. The way that organizations engage in work underpins many of the fundamental theories and ideas about organizations making it a critical area of research. In addition to providing feedback on specific papers, this research development workshop brings together scholars from across this topic area to discuss some of the challenges of studying emerging technologies and leverage the knowledge within the community.

Authors of accepted papers (up to 2 per paper) will be invited to participate in the workshop. Participants will discuss their papers and will also be responsible for reviewing and providing comments on 3-4 other papers accepted for the workshop.

The workshop will begin with an optional dinner at 6:00 pm on Thursday October 14 and conclude at 12:30 pm on Saturday October 16 (followed by an optional lunch). The workshop hosts will provide complimentary meals during the workshop, as well as lodging for the invited participants. Participants will be responsible for all transportation costs.

Submissions will be reviewed with preference given to:

    • Empirical exploration relevant to the area of the changing nature of work, organizations, and the role of emergent technology
    • Ideas developed into a manuscript at a stage that would benefit from workshop feedback
    • Potential for advancing theory

Example topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

    • How is work changing? Including the relationships between workers and between workers and technology.
    • Under what conditions do emerging technologies change how people see themselves in relation to their work and/or their organizations? Including the impact on wellbeing, processes of belonging, and identity dynamics.
    • How are labor markets transforming? Including the impact of technology on employment, professions and occupations.
    • What is the relationship between emerging technologies and organization design (e.g., organizational roles, structures)? Including changes in organizational boundaries, coordination, control, and knowledge transfer.
    • What is the dark side of using emerging technologies (e.g., discrimination, hidden bias, harmful behavior)? Including ethical questions and dilemmas.

Deadline to submit manuscript: 11:59 pm PDT on July 1, 2021

Authors will be notified about acceptances to the workshop by July 15, 2021

Deadline for updated manuscripts to be shared with fellow participants Sept 1, 2021.

If you are interested in participating in this research development workshop, please submit a manuscript by July 1, 2021. Authors will need to create an EasyChair account and submit a 200-word abstract along with their manuscripts.

    Submit manuscripts here: https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=cnow-21

*This is planned as an in person event and is subject to governmental and university level health restrictions. In the circumstance that an in person event is not possible, it will be canceled. Details will be communicated with accepted participants closer to the event date.
