The Role of Family Firms in Environmental Sustainability
Chairs: Sanjay Sharma and Pramodita Sharma
Sponsored by STR, ONE and ENT Divisions
This symposium brings together leading scholars working at the interface of environmental sustainability, strategic management and entrepreneurial family business to unpack how the positive and negative characteristics of family firms make them more or less likely to undertake patient investments in proactive sustainability strategies that may have uncertain and/or long-term paybacks. While family businesses dominate the global economy and range in size from small partnerships to giant Fortune 500 firms, over three decades of extant research in corporate sustainability has focused on non-family controlled firms with dispersed ownership. Family firms are significantly under-researched in this area of inquiry. Without understanding and engaging this dominant sector of most global economies, the division cannot achieve its mission of creating knowledge to understand the role of organizations in building a sustainable world. Strategic Management scholars will gain fresh insights from unique capability development/deployment and top management decision-making processes of family firms that foster patient long-term investments while achieving short-term economic outcomes.
