Does the ENT division ever send representatives to the November PhD Project Conference in Chicago?

For those who are unaware, the PhD Project has been working for over twenty years to increase the representation of minority scholars in business schools. In addition to hosting a conference prior to each field's primary conference (in our case, a conference in the days leading up to AOM) for minority doctoral students, they also have a large conference in Chicago for minority students interested in a doctorate in business. All attendees either have a master's degree or are currently in the process of getting one, and the PhD Project fully funds their travel and lodging. Furthermore, from my own experience, the female representation within the PhD Project is a bit better than that of Academy as a whole. At least in the August conference for management doctoral students, women seem to noticeably outnumber men (in my own cohort, we have three men and seven women), and all three executive officers this year are female.

Holding aside diversity considerations, the Chicago conference is a wonderful opportunity for business schools to get a leg up in recruitment and generally spreading the word about their doctoral programs, and it is a wonderful opportunity for the ENT division to help those entrepreneurship programs attract doctoral students. .

If diversity is something we take seriously, the PhD Project will be a willing ally.

I'm not aware that the Division as such has sent representatives to the PhD Project but several universities do, including my own. (All the PhD-granting departments in my unit collaborate to send representatives to the conference to recruit on behalf of all the PhD programs.)

Thanks Alexander for sharing this information!  Although other members of ENT may have heard about this I have not.  I am at a university that does not have doctoral students, but I am going to visit with our communications team and see if there is another way that we might be able to get this information out to our members.
    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Dawn and Peter,

It is amazing that the ENT division is seeking new ways to enhance the diversity and inclusiveness within the division and the profession in general.

I had the honour of attending my very first ever Academy of Management last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am currently a third year student researching the health and well-being of digital entrepreneurs, with intersectionality as a theoretical lens - intersectionality being the combination of social categories such as gender, race, class etc. Notably, I'm looking at marginalised groups such as ethnic minorities and females through the combination of their social categories, i.e. black women as double oppressed individuals. As my PhD is interdisciplinary it covers namely ENT, GDO and HCM divisions. Through attending last year, I noticed that there is definitely an exciting opportunity for more diversity and inclusion within ENT and entrepreneurship research in general hence my PhD. I would love to help with any initiatives you are planning especially in implementation from PhD level upwards as I believe it is important to integrate such initiatives and programs sooner rather than later. There were some great PDWs/events with some other divisions such as HCM and GDO which looked at diversity, inclusivity, inequality and overall marginality which were very impactful - it could be beneficial if ENT could collaborate and/or run a few of these such of events with the context of entrepreneurship at this years conference which I am more than happy to help with.

Look forward to hearing from you!

    All the best,
    Jennifer Agwunobi
