    With apologies for cross-posting.

    Dear colleagues,

We invite submissions for abstracts to the International QCA Paper Development Workshop 2019 (ETH Zurich, 11-12 December 2019). The International QCA Paper Development Workshop 2019 provides a unique platform for researchers working on papers involving QCA to meet QCA experts, get feedback on their on-going research, and learn about the latest methodological developments in QCA. The workshop is interdisciplinary and interactive, and allows for in-depth discussions and individual feedback from internationally renowned QCA scholars. We invite submission of abstracts from researchers applying QCA in various domains (e.g., sociology, political science, management, evaluation studies, international relations, medicine, and health) as well as policy and business consultants using QCA in their work. Typical participants are early career scholars who apply QCA for the first time, but we are also happy to welcome more senior scholars with an interest in QCA.

This year's workshop faculty includes among others the following scholars from various disciplines with substantive experience in using, developing, and teaching QCA:

    • Barbara Befani, Centre for Research in Social Simulation, University of Surrey
    • Bart Cambre, Antwerp Management School, University of Antwerp
    • Lasse Cronqvist, Dept. of Political Science, University of Trier
    • Adrian Dușa, Dept. of Sociology, University of Bucharest
    • Peer Fiss, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California, Los Angeles
    • Lasse Gerrits, Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics, and Business Administration, University of Bamberg
    • Thomas Greckhamer, Rucks Department of Management, Louisiana State University

    • James Mahoney, Dept. of Sociology, Northwestern University
    • Nena Oana, European University Institute, Florence
    • Charles Ragin, Dept. of Sociology, University of California, Irvine
    • Benoît Rihoux, Louvain School of Political and Social Sciences, UCLouvain
    • Claude Rubinson, Dept. of Social Sciences, University of Houston-Downtown
    • Carsten Schneider, Dept. of Political Science, Central European University
    • Eva Thomann, Dept. of Politics, University of Exeter

    Preliminary Workshop Program

The International QCA Paper Development Workshop primarily consists of roundtable forums for participants to receive detailed feedback from QCA experts on their ongoing research projects. The workshop will begin with a keynote by James Mahoney in the late afternoon of December 11th, 2019, followed by a get-together. On December 12th, 2019, the roundtable forums will take place in small groups with approximately two QCA experts and three to five participants to allow for in-depth discussions. The workshop program will also include two focused sessions providing participants with an overview of software packages for conducting QCA analysis and with practical insights relevant for successfully publishing QCA papers (e.g., choice of journal, paper structure). The workshop also includes sufficient opportunities and time to interact and socialize with all the participants.

Submission Procedure, Schedule and Best Paper Award

To participate in the workshop, please submit an extended abstract of 1,000-1,500 words to jmeuer@ethz.ch by September 29th, 2019. Your abstract should summarize your study's topical area, theoretical background, research gap and question, and include details about the data, analytical strategy (for empirical papers), and preliminary results. A panel of QCA experts will review all submissions and evaluate their fit with the workshop according to clarity of purpose, methodological rigor, and innovative character of the research. We will notify applicants no later than October 20th, 2019 about opportunities to participate. Accepted participants may submit a full paper by November 24th, 2019. A panel of experts will review all full papers submitted in time to recognize the authors of outstanding submissions with the 2019 Best Paper Award.

Workshop Fee, PhD Travel Stipend, Hosting and Venue

Participation in the workshop is free of charge. We will provide coffee, tea, and snacks during breaks, on December 12th, 2019. Participants will need to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses. We will provide a limited number of hotel rooms at a discounted price and are happy to help find suitable accommodation. We're also happy to be able to offer a limited number of Travel Stipend of up to CHF 500 for PhD students participating in the workshop. Please inform us with your submission if you want to be considered for one of the stipends. The workshop will take place at ETH Zurich and is hosted jointly by ETH Zurich, Eawag (Aquatic Science), the University of Wuppertal and the University of Bamberg.
