    Job Description

    Fred and June Kummer Endowed Department Chair, Business and Information Technology

    Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) invites applications for the position of the Fred and June Kummer Endowed Department Chair of Business and Information Technology, with an anticipated starting date of August 2022.

    The Kummer Institute for Student Success, Research and Economic Development was established in October 2020 through a gift of $300 million from June and Fred Kummer, longtime benefactors of Missouri S&T. The Institute will transform Missouri S&T and the south-central Missouri region by cultivating leadership and technological innovation; nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset; fostering expansion of academic-industry partnerships to directly address emerging needs of industry; and creating economic growth for the region. The academic arm of the Institute is the new Kummer College of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, which is the academic home of the Department of Business and Information Technology (BIT).

    The department seeks an exceptionally qualified scholar to provide leadership and vision in the department and in the Kummer College. The Kummer Endowed Chair will have access to generous endowment funds that will help elevate the department, advance long-term strategic priorities, and initiate and sustain collaboration among the department and other units across and beyond campus. 

    The Department of Business and Information Technology consists of 12 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 2 ranked non-tenure-track faculty, 2 academic specialists, and 2 staff members. The department is AACSB accredited and will host an accreditation visit in 2023. The research interests of the faculty cover many areas, including traditional business areas as well as applied information technology in a business context. The Department of Business and Information Technology has recently been announced as an inaugural department in the Kummer College of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development on the Missouri S&T campus. The department also plays an important role in terms of interdisciplinary interactions with other departments and in the training of a large number of undergraduate students in fundamental areas such as entrepreneurship, information technology, and technological innovation management. The department has B.S., M.S., and MBA programs, with over 100 graduate students and about 250 undergraduate students.     Minimum Qualifications

    Ideal candidates will have a Ph.D. in business, information technology, or a closely related discipline and hold the rank of full professor or be qualified for tenure and appointment to the rank of full professor at the time of appointment. They should have an outstanding record of scholarship evidenced by a strong record of publication as well as a clear and demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of students at all levels. Just as important, candidates should be able to demonstrate success as an effective, inspiring, and collegial academic leader.

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    As department chair, the successful candidate will be expected to:

    • Provide leadership and vision related to excellence in BIT education initiatives;
    • Raise the visibility of the department both on campus and nationally/internationally;
    • Establish a strong and sustainable relationship between the new Kummer College and the work of the department;
    • Provide a clear and consistent vision of future development for the department that is well-integrated into Missouri S&T's STEM focused environment;
    • Participate in scholarly activities to achieve and maintain AACSB qualification;
    • Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and help foster economic development;
    • Steward the active and engaged BIT Advisory Board;
    • Recruit and retain excellent faculty, staff and students;
    • Promote student success as well as enrollment growth in department majors;
    • Prepare and manage a department budget, as well as efficiently allocate department resources;
    • Demonstrate knowledge and success in curriculum and program development and management;
    • Exhibit knowledge of the requirements of AACSB accreditation;
    • Advocate for the needs of the department to campus administration, and effectively communicate campus issues to the department.
