Entrepreneurship competitions (e.g. business plan, new venture, pitch, etc.) have become commonplace in entrepreneurial education programs. What research exists on the value and optimal design of these competitions? How have scholars generalized findings from these simulated or curated contexts to broader entrepreneurial phenomena?

Thanks for any references or other suggestions!

Jessica - there is some work, including a doctoral thesis, in the UK by Catherine Brentnall that includes the possible negative impacts -I think you will like!

    Enjoy!

    Hi, Jessica.

I and Tales Andreassi wrote a book chapter nearly 10 years agora about BP competitions called The use of business plan competitions as an entrepreneurship teaching tool. Although the article is in Portuguese, you may find helpful to take a look at the references.

We are now working on a new article that will be called something like “the rise and fall of business plan competitions as e-ship teaching tool” as the two initial business plan competitions (Charm Prize - Babson and Moot Corp - Austin) were discontinued in whole context in which investors are not looking at BPs anymore.

I hope that helps you. Please let me know if can be of further help.

    Regards,

    Rene

@Jessica, Catherine is not a member of ENT so cannot respond directly - here is another link for you from her (open access for a few more weeks) https://www.researchgate.net/publication/328907407_The_contribution_of_realist_evaluation_to_critical_analysis_of_the_effectiveness_of_entrepreneurship_education_competitions

I saw your post on the website of the AOM.

I wrote an article on the Junior Achievement program and we found that the competitions were counterproductive for some of the participating students.

If you are interested we can discuss this further.

I am running a start up competition and have written some paper drafts on it. The competition is similar to that of Tina Seiligs 5 dollar challenge.
