Loss of Vibrancy

Is it my imagination, or has both the quantity and quality of substantive exchange diminished considerably on our list-serv since moving over to Connect@AOM?

    Hi Paige,

Thanks for your message about the loss of vibrancy in terms of quantity and quality of the listserv posts since the transition to AoM Connect.

Regarding quantity, I went back and counted the messages that we've seen posted in the last month (since the transition)...there have been roughly 35 posts. If we continue at this pace, based on my count of last year's posts at this time, we'll end up about 10% lower for February.

Regarding quality, I'll leave that up to the community. And, if there are topics that we want to discuss, to improve the quality of our engagement, I certainly welcome that!

    Again, thanks for your message!

    Best, Jeff

    Hi Page,

Great question!  Jeff and I are going to do some analyses and check with Academy to see how many listserve members came over and how many still need to migrate.  We will make every effort to rebuild the vibrancy!

I was wondering the same thing as Paige. While I can't speculate to whether or not we have more or fewer posts, I know I'm personally not looking at nearly as many of the posts as I used to nor in as much detail as I used to simply because it feels like it is now more work to do so / it's not as easy as it was. n=1, of course.

    Hi Eric,

Great point.  Thank you.  It can be more work BUT it can also be as easy as replying to an email.  For this reply, I just replied to your message and it will post to the board the same way it used to.

    Hi,

Pursuant to Page's observation regarding the loss of vibrancy as a result of our transition to Connect, we did some research.  Based on our investigation we found:

    • We have 3,223 current members.
    • Since the Community was switched to AOM Connect, 179 people have joined who were not Ent Division members,
    • We also have had 53 people leave the community.
    • Of the 3223 members
      • 17 people are receiving messages in real-time.
      • 75 have elected to receive no emails and the rest are getting daily digests.

Our working hypotheses are that part of the decrease in the discussion is due to two factors:

    1. Many the individuals who were active on the listserv have not yet migrated to Connect.  To address this we will reach out to them again and recruit them to Connect.  It is free, and they only need to create an account with Academy.

    1. Many of our active members (99.48%) are receiving the communications only through the Daily Digest. The discussion would likely be more vibrant if more people received messages in real time.  To address this we have created an instruction sheet to show you how to change your Community Notifications for Daily Digest to Real Time.  The option is available under the "My Account" tab.  The sheet is attached here and will be in our file repository.

Any other thoughts on how you increase the level of discussion would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Lou and Jeff

    Hi,

One idea to consider would be to make the real-time email notifications the default for new accounts.

    Thanks Kevin-yes, good idea!

Lou and I are working with the folks at AoM to explore that option (to have the default be "real-time"). And, we are working on a few other ideas as well to increase the value of the listserv as well as the level of engagement that we see on the platform.

This is my first contribution in the new format and the reason is the title and the fact that there was a conversation going.  All I've seen (and I don't look every day) are conference notices, calls for papers etc, job postings.   Barbara

Thanks Barbara, for your note to the listserv.

You've touched on an important point-what, exactly, is the optimal role that the listserv can play? As you observed, the posts lately have been primarily information-related.

My sense is that the sharing of relevant information will continue to be one main function of the listserv.

However, in addition to sharing information, one other aim for this listserv is to be among the first places academics and practitioners go to discuss topics as well as to receive (and ask for) feedback. We hope it continues to be a safe and constructive place to share ideas, thoughts, as well as questions (in addition to information).

As always, Lou and I remain available for suggestions and comments about how we can enable the listserv to as useful as possible to our members. Please do email me and Lou anytime with feedback!

One quick note-even though this is a new platform, the posting of messages is still really easy. Simply email the post you'd like to make to: aom-ent@connectedcommunity.org

    Best regards, Jeff

I’m laughing because I clicked on the thread thinking it was a discussion about the loss of vibrancy in the field and the classroom, which I think are an actual issue. Seems that registrations and job postings are down, but that’s just observation not an empirical result.
